Up, Way up

Today marks 50 years since the first humans finally reached the top of the Earth. On this day in 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary became the first, followed by his sherpa Tenzing Norgay, to reach the 8850m summit of Mt. Everest (then return safely. George Mallory and Andrew Irvine may have accomplished the feat in 1924, but they died on the mountain and no one knows for sure.

I just don’t get it. Why do it? Besides braging rights and ego, the view from up there is most likely no different than any other, much lower, mountain top. And you don’t risk dieing from cerebral or pulmonary edema, or from the elements. I agree with Hillary that the mountain should be closed to climbers. Come on people can’t you find something more productive to do with you lives.
