Keep right execpt to pass

Is is so hard for people on the highway to keep right, execpt when passing. You know if you are too far to the left if (i) there is no car on your right and you are not soon to pass any, (ii) you are going the same speed as the car to your right, (III) IF SOME ON PASSES YOU ON THE RIGHT. If the latter occurs you are a dumbass that is cruising were you shouldn’t be. This is VERY DANGEROUS. Some sit in the middle lane thinking you can go around to the left, but little do they realise that if someone else is going even faster then they have to slow down.
This brings me to a common fallacy used by those that are “left lane lovers”. These are people that will not move from the left lane until they have to get off the highway. No matter that their little Geo is full at puttering along at the speed limit. These drivers have the common belief that I’m going the speed limit (or I’m going X km/h more than the limit) so you shouldn’t be going faster than me, so I’m not going to move.
WRONG, on so many levels. Yes, in theory nobody should be going more than the limit, but this is reality folks. By forcing cars to your right at a higher rate of speed than yourself, and a much higher rate than those it the lanes further to the right you are just asking for trouble [as I witnessed for the thousandth time tonight], we will call him Dumbass#1.
The near collision I witnessed was compounded by the stupidity of the driver in the right lane who had just joined the highway. I was going to move to the middle lane to let Dumbass#2 merge into the right lane, as I should. I didn’t because I saw Dumbass#3 swooping down on the left and I knew DA1 wasn’t going to move. So sure enough, DA3 went to pass on the right. As this was going on, DA2, with nothing in front of him for as far as you could see, decided to go to middle lane.
HONK, SCREECH, SWERVE. (amazing no CRASH)
I’m sure DA2 never looked behind, nor did DA1. DA2 and DA3 nearly kissed in the middle of the middle lane, luckly DA1 was now behind DA2 and could see in front enough to slow down and let DA2 swerve into the left lane, DA2 took off.
I had been off the gas for sometime and a ways back, since I’ve seen this pattern of behaviour much too many times.
So the moral of the story. KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS.
Maybe then there will be fewer collisions and car insurance could be keeped at a resonable rate (FYI - Insurance companies lose money on car insurance, and make up the difference with house and life.. so don’t bitch about the high insurance rates, they could be worse. And more important, what are you doing to help keep them down?)
