Day one began with an early wake up call, a very cold walk to Nickels for a $3.33 early bird big breakfast. Then my first ride on Montreal’s Metro (what is with the tires on the subway cars?) to Centre Mont-Royal for a full day of talks on Software Quality.
Dr. Pierre Robillard began the day with the first keynote of the conference. He is the Chair of Computer and Software Engineering at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, and discussed Software Quality, the theme of the conference, by a fun story of software development. It was a two part presentation, the story and a listing of buzzwords refering to standards and processes, but the connection was rather weak. In the description of many of the “industry standards” (ISO 9001, IEEE 370, 12207, etc.) we see that the quality of software is not insured, because you can get certification for a standard and still have a poor quality product. I’ve seen it.
Tony Rice, from Telelogic have a very interesting presentation of his companies requirements tools. The emphasis of the presentation was traceability, from requirements to testing and back. The tool does a good job of showing the links, but the lack of formalisation was uneasy with me.
The other talks I when to were ok, but nothing worthy of space here. I had some problems with one that solved a good problem at the wrong level. More on that another day. It was bitterly cold on the walk back to the hotel, so I’m signing off to go warm up. More posting tomorrow from CUSEC, courtesy of Apple’s WiFi Cafe.
