New Mac i/PowerBooks

Apple released new iBooks and PowerBooks that feature fast processors, unfortunately they are still G4s. The PowerBook now has Wi-Fi built-in as a standard, even for the 12′. If Apple doesn’t announce the G5 PowerBook at Macworld in July I will start to look at the alternatives. I hear the new IBM Thinkpads are Linux friendly, or a dual core Opteron would be nice too.

As an aside on Apple and the Linux on the Desktop debate. If Apple would open source Aqua, it would truely put Linux as #1 on the desktop because the Apple interface would be able to reach a much larger market than only on Apple’s hardware. The hardware business used to be big money, but now it is razor thin margins. Keep building great hardware for your niche, because the people that buy it, will buy it! Instead, free the desktop and continue to sell your applications for Darwin/Aqua and Linux/Aqua systems. This market is much MUCH larger than your current one! So we need you Apple to put Linux on the Desktop.
(more on this later, time to study 3/4 exams to go. 7 days to freedom)

Hmm, looks like I’ll be waiting for the Apple Tablet instead of the G5 PowerBook. Manufacturing plants are setup and waiting to roll them off the lot. Apple was apparently waiting for the UltraWideBand spec to be nailed down. It is going to be a very interactive Tablet, with TV even. Cool stuff.
