2 Big Apple announcements

First, the fourth generation iPod has been released from Apple. The new model is similar to the 3G iPod in size and mass, but the four buttons across the top have been eliminated by the new scroll wheel (it is the same as the Mini iPod wheel). Many are calling the new prices for the new digital audio devices a “price drop”. This is just a cleaver marketing trick. I like to the think of the new iPods as upgrades to the previous ones, so really it is a price increase.
Proof: 15Gb G3 is the “bottom of the line” model, and does not come with a case or cradle. Now this is the package for the 20Gb 4G iPod, which has become the smallest of the pods. But the old bottom of the line model was $399 CAD, the new one is $429.
Even though it doesn’t look as pretty, I still prefer my iRiver H-120 over the iPod because of the extra features and longer battery life.

Second bit of news is not from Apple, but from Gentoo. Gentoo, along with the Fink and DarwinPorts developers have come together to bring Portage to OS X. Now my migration to an Apple notebook will be even easier. Read more here.
