VW TDI over 1000km a tank — no lie

Unlike disappointed hybrid owners that do not get the advertised mileage (Read more about the poor performance of hybrids from Wired News, Edmonds, Heartland Institute, more from Google) of 4.9L/100km city, 4.6L/100km highway (for the Civic Hybrid, source NRC - Office of Energy Efficiency).

The VW Jetta TDI consumption rating by the OEE is 7.3L/100km city, 5.0L/100km highway (read it here). Not only does the TDI diesel meet the government consumption rating (few vehicles do), it actually beats it - getting into the low 4L/100km range for highway trips.

In fact, VW’s advertisements of getting over 1000km(*) per tank need not be stared with fine print - as proven by this photo taken after a return trip between Toronto and Montreal, with an 1/8th (~6L) of fuel still in the tank - I managed 1078.6 km, or 4.2L/100km (23.6km/L). Had I not filled up at that time I could have reached 1300km, or 800 miles.
1078 km on one tank
