Mass media assimilation

CBC News: BCE sells major stake in Bell Globemedia to Torstar, Teachers’. As if the lack of original content and indepth journalism in today’s private mass media was not bad enough - but that is alright, we have the CBC/BBC/NPR and the blogosphere - Torstar now owns 20% of Bell Globemedia, which runs The Globe and Mail, CTV, CTV Newsnet, etc.
Now we’ve seen the reprinting/reairing of articles from other sources without credit or that were purely speculation or where paid for (Katrina, Iraq, dirtybombers, pharma results, etc.) - they were exposed because the facts came out to be wrong - but how much of that did not get flagged as bad information by competing media organisations.
In Canada at least, this merger bring to an end another check and balance against the misinformation or uninformation brought to you by big media. Worse, the last refuge of quality (i.e. non-sensationalist, non-hollywood, non-partisan) journalism will get shutdown if the Conservatives win the upcomming election.
