AutoWeek | Mercedes cancels by-wire brake system; decision a blow to technology’s future
Many cars currently use a drive-by-wire system for the accelerator, and if it fails it is not necessarily a safety critical issue (you just don’t go anywhere - safe, unless you are on train tracks with a loco coming). But if your brake-by-wire system (instead of purely mechanical) fails, it switches over to the hydraulic system taking longer to stop and more effort from the driver. This could be dangerous in a situation because of the longer stopping time, as well as being a destraction to the driver.
The cause of the problem was elaborated on (being a auto e-zine) except that it was a software problem. I’m curious to find out what the problem is, it would make a great case study example. Since the system is being recalled it looks like a solution to the problem cannot be found. I’d like to take on that challenge. I hope things work out so that I can help preventBosch from wasting 147 million Euros and nine years on a system that only made it in to 700,000 vehicles.
