So long Paul

With the right united, and the Liberal drift to the right under Paul Martin’s watch, ended up spliting the leftist vote between his Liberals and the NDP. The result is the end of yet another Liberal dynasty (the are the most successful political party in the world). Paul fulfilled his familial destiny, by becoming the 21st Prime Minister of Canada. But he will long be remembered as the man behind the curtain pulling the strings to create a stable economic base for Canada to grow.

We have all paid for the laying of that foundation, in terms of health care, education, and infrastructure cuts. But the base is one where the economy is running at full capacity, unemployment is at a long time low, debt is being paid down, and almost a decade of balanced budgets. But we will reflect that the past 7-8 years have been will be a short term pain for a long term gain (as long as we being the reinvestment in social programmes).

Martin’s sign off speech was classy, respectful, and genuine. He was a person, being himself, not a persona. Kind makes you think that all the garbage that came out of his mouth over the last 56 days were in a way, in combination with all the other campaign problems and weakness, a way out for him, and a way to rejuvinate his party moving forward.

Good luck to him, and good luck to us with the changes in direction of government. Some time ago, (April 2004) I said that the policial landscape would be changing and interesting… I’m happy I was right, and look forward to the changes to continue.
