CBC News: Opposition targets Emerson, Fortier appointments
After a flawless campaign, that presented nothing (except policy) for its opposition to validly attack, (a] we all know that policy does not win elections, but who presents their policy better. b] The Libs attacked decade old quotes of one person, instead of reflecting on the conservative party’s current values. The NDP and Bloc hardly presented an attack towards them) the new party that is now governing Canada appears to have dropped two balls on opening day, also droping the public’s belief that the new government will be ethical, accountable, and democratic.
First, letting David Emerson pull a reverse-”Belinda” after all the questioning of her loyalty and ethics around that affair in May of 2005. Second, appointing someone (Fortier) that was not elected to 1) the Senate, and 2) the critical portfolio of Public Works that hands out billions of dollars. That flies in the face of Harper’s pledge not to make partisan appointments, and the principal that members of the Senate should be elected.
Not to mentions some of the other choices of cabinet ministers, but those will prove themselves. For a guy that proved to be a great strategiser in the run up to, and in the election I find today’s moves surprising. Maybe he is just a few moves ahead of the rest of us, or left his A game on the Opposition benches. Should continue to be interesting times.
