Can you say WiFi Podcast Radio to a car near Toronto?
Toronto Hydro Corp. needs to roll out smart metering of electricity consumption (legislated by the Province of Ontario) to bill at variable rates throughout the day instead of one flat rate that does not curb consumption at times of peak electricity demand. So how does THC propose to do the communications with all these smart meters? Wirelessly of course. Since they are already planning to blanket the city with wireless communications to send electicity consumption data back to the mothership, why not cover your costs by providing Internet access!?
Take that up your packet shaping silo and smoke it Ted Rogers!

[…] For $45-$60/month replace your wired cable/adsl internet connection for a wireless one from Bell and Rogers. If it is as reliable as Rogers phone service, watch out. But an interesting new service for those on the move. Decent coverage areas, uses a licensed frequency band to limit interference from microwaves and cordless phones and is more secure than Toronto Hydro’s WiFi plan. But also more than 2x as expensive.
