It is about the fans

CBC Sports Online: NHL Playoffs 2006

Great to see Edmonton making it to the Cup Finals. Good job boys! What great hockey. It brings back long forgotten memories as a kid watching the Oilers go to the Cup. It is also good that a Canadian team might win for the first time in 13 years.

The argument has been made that most player on ALL the teams in the NHL are Canadian, so it does not matter if an “American” team win the Cup. The problem with that argument is that it is based on the false premise that it is about the guys on the team that matters. Recall, professional sports are the “sports ENTERTAINMENT” industry. Who are they there to entertain? The Fans! The fans feel a sense of national pride when one of our country’s teams makes it to/and wins the Cup. So go and win it all Oilers, because you are doing it for more than just your team’s fans.
