Ususally Don Cherry just rambles offensive nonsense for 5 minutes between the first and second period on CBC HNIC’s Coaches Corner, but today he was right. The automatic minor for shooting the puck over the glass in the defensive zone is “dumb”. As the clip showed, there are many cases when a bouncing puck accidentally goes over the glass, results in a penalty, results in a goal.
The original rule was sufficient, if a player intentionally shoots the puck out to relieve pressure, at the discretion of the official it is a minor penalty. Hopefully next year, it goes back to that.
