globeandmail.com : Only 32% back PM on Mideast
This is the Globes above the fold story…
It doesn’t surprise me that the numbers a low, in fact I expected lower. But it seems that many of the respondents do have a clue about what is really going on in the Middle East, despite their responces. Let’s look at some of the inconsistencies of the numbers.
How closely have you been following the Middle East conflict?
Closely: 72%
Not closely: 28%
Wow, that’s a lot! Results should be meaningful, unless “closely” means looking at the aweful pictures during the evening news, and not learning about the deeper issues. Knowing that a couple dozen children were killed, but not knowing the reason does not count a “closely”. Let’s see why…
What do you think the government’s position is?
Remaining neutral 12%
Supporting one side 39%
Don’t know 49%
OK, 49 - 28 = 31% didn’t answer the first question honestly… maybe more if the non-closely people knew the correct answer.
Why do you think Mr. Harper has taken this position? (supports Israeli actions)
CANADA
Domestic political considerations 10%
Out of principle 19%
Because it is in line with U.S. President George W. Bush and his administration 53%
Other/ don’t know 18%
I have to give Steve the benefit of his response this type of question, he is not doing because of peer-pressure, it is that he sees things from the same perspective as W’s advisors. I’ll leave it to you to decide if theses priciples are good or bad.
The pooling does show that people in Quebec are informed, and have opinions. To bad for Steve his new “base” is on the other side of this issue. But I find it strange that there is no politicking from the Bloc on this one to take back some support and show that their values are much more inline with Quebecers than the Conservatives. And the Libs are too busy looking at themselves to comment. I haven’t seen a leadership hopeful make a noteworthy comment on the issue. Too busy fundraising I guess. Hey it worked for W, he didn’t have a clue about the world before 2000… right, he still doesn’t I forgot. As for the leadership contenders, I’d like to hear from Mike, Bob, and Ken on this one.
