In addition to a 26 percent production increase over past year — for a total of 5,644 metric tons — the amount of land under cultivation in opium poppies grew by 61 percent. Cultivation in the two main production provinces, Helmand in the southwest and Oruzgan in central Afghanistan, was up by 132 percent.
Good to know the rebuilding efforts of our troops has made it possible for the optium trade to flourish after years decline when it was outlawed by the ruling Taliban. Since some of the Afghan government ministers are known “warlords” and heroin exporters, I see why Canada’s presence ‘is a must’. Seriously, use the fertile land to produce food for improving the standard of living of all Afghans instead of filling the pockets of a few in power and call that economic growth.
