Social voyeurism

I have been unlike many my age, those that grew up in the age of the Internet. I have had a tube to the webs and the googles since the web was 3 years old. So I get most Net tech, regardless if I use it or not. One such thing has been the ever increasing venues of social networking online. I was amased this weekend to see the surge of the personal and sometime mundane that is being share to the webs of internets. It would have taken a lot of trucks to carry all those pictures posted to Flickr.
While the sharing of some of the photos from the days and nights at PodCampToronto I can understand… Going through much of what Flickr has to offer, i see it as Social Voyeurism. It is not sexual in nature, but it seem to provide those looking without being seen some sort of pleasure. How many people out there are just scrolling through your life caught on camera and posted to flickr… made even easier with tool like Flickr Booth.
Then there are the multitude of other SN sites… But really struck me was the openness some people have with Twitter. Dudes SERIOUSLY, you want to let ANYBODY know where you are, what you are doing, in real-time… If only I were that trusting of society. With the incidents of online identity theft and other crimes I cannot believe that resource has not been exploited for nefarious purposes. And WHEN it does … watch out. The bubble got smaller with the YouTube bridezilla hoax, but it will burst when more than just your trust is taken… when your money and identity go for a walk the networks will shrink to the stustainable 150 people (Dunbar’s number). So until that time, advertise your life lightly…. you’ve been warned.
