The Long Tail: Kevin Kelly’s Free Book Experiment

Why is everything about advertising? Yes companies (like Google) make a tonne of money from advertising, but I’ve yet to see a convincing display that there is a decent return on investment from it. Imagine if all that cash that goes to ads goes to advertising went to making a better product, providing your customers with “free extras”, etc. That would keep them coming back. Business 101 teaches it is a lot cheaper to keep a customer coming back than to gain a new customer. It also teaches that 1 in 11 satisfied customers will make a recommendation… (where as 1 in 3 would share a negative experience). So why not create the positive experience of a free Ebook without the ads. Further, stop wasting your revenues on advertising and creating a better user experience.
