CBC.ca: Bell recovers stolen data on 3.4 million customers
Bell did not recover the stolen data. Police may have recovered a copy of the data in the possession of the dude that got caught trying to hawk unlisted numbers, but digital data can never be considered “recovered” in the sense that they got it back and nobody else can get it. Unlike “police recovered stolen gold bars”, electrons are not recoverable - in both senses. That is, you cannot consider the unlisted numbers out of the hands of some other person. Nor can you consider the only copy of your thesis/report/book/essay/paper/tax return recoverable when the hard drive it is on seizes up.
