TDI Mileage

I’m back in the habit of updating my fuel consumption statistics for my 2005 VW Jetta TDI. You can see the details here, or by clicking the “tdi mileage” in the nav bar at the top of the page. This post will get updated with every fill, along with the monthly average image […]

Maven or monkey?

So I’ve been doing a lot of reading of late, trying to improve on my preparation to really contribute to society. (Luck/Success = Preparation + Opportunity) I have an enormous (but self-under-valued) skill set in my field of study (Software Engineering –that is, use of software to solve engineering problems–), little of which I […]

Pigoline

Philoneist: EXCLUSIVE: Nascar Fuel Expert Claims Invention of “Pigoline” Gas
Forget biodiesel, gasoline made from pig shit… too cool, finally closing the loop. Gives a new definition to waste not, want not.

“This guy can take a gallon of piss, shit and water and turn it into a gallon of gasoline.”

Can i make this stuff at home?

Biodiesel Lola to Race in Le Mans

Treehugger | Biodiesel Lola to Race in Le Mans
Go BioDiesel Go… I hope this team does well at Le Mans (it should because of the less frequent pit stops) but more importantly I cannot wait to find out the results of their gruelling tests on BD to determine the best ratios for efficiency and ecology.

The Jetta - After one year

Well, AVNL (aka Black Betty) is a year old today. After 29,700 kms all is running well and the TDI still purrs like it was new. The tdi-mileage like in the menu takes to directly to my updated stats after every fillup, but I’d to summarise some of the notable points about the […]

Forget hybrids, America; diesels will provide economy, performance

Forget hybrids, America; diesels will provide economy, performance - 10/26/05, via The Detroit News - Autos Insider.
Summary, new diesels (especially those running BioDiesel) result in a better performing, more economical, and more environmentally friendly than gasoline-hybrids. Europeans get it, Asians get it… North Americans are a little slow (as always).

VW TDI over 1000km a tank — no lie

Unlike disappointed hybrid owners that do not get the advertised mileage (Read more about the poor performance of hybrids from Wired News, Edmonds, Heartland Institute, more from Google) of 4.9L/100km city, 4.6L/100km highway (for the Civic Hybrid, source NRC - Office of Energy Efficiency).
The VW Jetta TDI consumption rating by the OEE is 7.3L/100km city, […]

Jetta TDI fuel consumption update

I have updated my stats page for the fuel consumption data of my VW Jetta TDI. As you can seen in the graph, the consumption rate has been steadily decreasing over the first 4 months of operation, and 11200km! From my research the rate will continue to get better for at least […]

Diesel awareness in North America improving

An article in this month’s Mechanical Engineering Magazine brings to light the many benefits of diesel powered passenger vehicles. The North American market has been adversely turned against the diesel, since the loud and smelly engines from GM and Ford in the past. As usual, the European consumer is more educated and aware […]

Fuel Consumption Graph

I really don’t know why I’ve become so obsessed with mesuring the fuel consumtion of the new Jetta… I guess it is just how good the TDI compares to any gasser on the road.
I have put up a quick and dirty Summary.
